Dual environment 6.5 and 8.5.1

We are hoping to upgrade to 8.5.1 when it comes out.
We are currently testing 8.5 with a small group and decided to wait for 8.5.1 to rollout to our partner base.
We use policies in 6.5 and wondered when we start migrating users to 8.5.1 can the Desktop policy we currently have be modified with all the settings that pertain to 8.5.1 and how would that effect our 6.5 users who have not been migrated over as of yet.
